FDA Food Contact Notification 944 awarded to Enviro Tech Chemical Services, allowing the use of a new bromine-based antimicrobial for meat and poultry.
February 18, 2010 — Enviro Tech Chemical Services, Inc. was awarded FDA Food Contact Notification 944 for the use of a new liquid bromine-based antimicrobial for the meat and poultry industry. This new patent-pending technology will be marketed under the name HB2. It has all the same antimicrobial benefits as chlorine-based products, but has the advantage of being more stable at higher pH's encountered in most processing applications, has a more benign toxicology profile, and may be used at higher concentrations than chlorine, which result in a better efficacy profile than chlorine-based products. In light of the recent ban on the use of chlorine-based products by many other countries throughout the world, this product is a welcome addition to the stable of halogen-based products that are the mainstay for US meat and poultry processing. Jonathan Howarth, Ph.D, VP of Technology, is quoted as saying "In the field of bromine-based antimicrobials, this product is unsurpassed in terms of efficacy, cost effectiveness, ease of use, and worker safety."
Bromine-based antimicrobials have proven efficacy against Listeria, Salmonella, E. Coli O157:H7, and Campylobacter, as well as spoilage-causing microorganisms. In recent years, meat and poultry processors have come under increased scrutiny due to highly-publicized food borne illness outbreaks associated with Listeria, Salmonella, and E. Coli O157:H7.
